How and what to feed a little kitty?

Proper nutrition of a small cat is crucial for its development. It also dramatically affects his physical condition in adulthood. The kitten’s diet should be varied and fully meet his natural needs. In the nutrition of young animals, the amount of food eaten and the frequency of meals is also essential. So, how and what to feed a little kitty.

What to feed a little kitty?

Kittens’ life can be divided into two necessary periods: before weaning and after weaning. And as the division criterion, we take the toddlers’ diet, which is opposit at both stages.
From the moment of birth until about the third or fourth week of life, the kitten’s menu consists only of mother’s milk, which in terms of composition best suits the needs of a baby infant. However, it is possible to raise orphaned suckling on substitute foods. However, since this issue is quite extensive, we will not deal with it now – it is a topic for a separate article. Let’s skip the problem of feeding kittens at the weaning stage, i.e. changing the diet from milk to solid food. Most of us are dealing with furries, which are already able to eat alone.

So what food should little cats get when they eat alone? In old studies on the care of our purring pets, you can meet the recommendation to give the youngest furries porridge with milk! Undoubtedly, the authors of these texts assumed that since oatmeal is a healthy and easily digestible meal for human infants, it certainly must also be for cat babies (especially since it is with milk). However, they did not take into account that humans and cats are entirely different species, so their nutritional needs are completely different! So they were wrong for two reasons.
Let’s start with the fact that semolina is made up of wheat, and this certainly is not the natural food of our purring pupils. Nature has not adapted cats to digest and absorb cereal grains. What’s more, the protein of these plants – and especially the one that we find in wheat grains – is one of the most common causes of food allergy in our quadrupeds.

The second problem is cow’s milk, which we usually use in our kitchen. Due to the different composition, it does not provide kittens with the right nutrients in the right amounts. Cow’s milk also contains a lot of lactose. By switching to solid food, cats lose enzymes that break down this sugar, which can result in health problems after eating cow’s milk – vomiting, diarrhoea. Also, after separation from the mother, furries do not need milk at all.
The conclusion from the above is that feeding a small cat with semolina on milk is not only pointless but also can have a very negative impact on their health.

Generally speaking, plant-based products are not the right food for our pets. The diet of our pets should be composed. So what we should feed a little kitty is. And the healthiest of all is raw meat for our pet, because the heat treatment deprives it of many valuable ingredients for it, for example, vitamins. It is worth knowing that in the course of evolution of the cat’s body has adapted to taking vitamins from the collections of other animals, not from plants, as is the case with humans.
Many cats do not want to give their pets raw meat, fearing for their health. However, when we buy them in a store with food for people, we obtain a product tested by doctors, so rather safe (we also eat such raw meat in the form of tartare). After all, it is worth freezing them for at least two weeks before serving them to your pet – dividing them into single portions, because thawed ones must not be re-frozen!

Our purring friends can thus eat beef, veal, lamb or mutton. It is only risky to feed kittens raw pork meat because pigs are carriers of Aujeszky’s disease – harmless to humans, but very dangerous to cats! Some also recommend that poultry and fish intended for quadrupeds be subjected to thermal treatment.
Kittens can also eat stomachs, hearts, livers and other offal from animal foods. Although they are not as nutritious as meat, it does not mean that it is worthless. Don’t overdo it with their quantity. Eggs are also a healthy addition to the kids’ diet – they are best when they cooked because raw ones contain avidin – a protein that hinders the absorption of biotin.

Vegetables and fruits can be an addition to the menu of our pets, but they are not necessary for their life and proper development. The share of vegetables and fruits in the cat’s diet should not exceed 5%.
There are still ready foods for kittens, dry and wet. A wide range of these products is available on the Polish zoological market, so we have a lot to choose from. Let’s pay attention to their composition. Good quality food for kittens is mainly characterized by high meat content and a lack of cereals! Only this should enter our pet’s menu!

Does the diet of kittens need to be varied?

The kittens’ diet should be varied. The more diverse the menu of our pupils is, the better. This is not just about the health aspect. Thanks to varied meals, children get used to many flavours, so they are less disgusted with food when they grow up.
What foods should not be given to kittens? We have already listed a few products not recommended for kittens. Also, our pets should not yet eat chocolate and other sweets, garlic, onions, chives, potatoes, apple seeds, rhubarb, peaches, apricots, grapes, raisins and avocados. Mushrooms, fatty sauces, bread and legumes are also prohibited. Also, do not give cats food for dogs, because it does not match the composition of their nutritional needs, and of course, human dishes, which usually contain a lot of spices.

How often do you feed your kittens?

We already know how to feed a little kitty, the question is – how often? Well, the daily dose of food should be divided into several meals. This has two advantages: it does not burden the toddlers’ stomachs and is compatible with the natural diet of cats. Both small and adult cats prefer to eat little, but often.
A proven technique for feeding kittens is to give them constant access to dry food – if of course, we give it to pets. In addition, during the day I serve toddlers with meat and other moist products, but in quantities that can be eaten for one meal – lying in a bowl, they quickly begin to deteriorate. Let’s also remember about constant access to water! Cats, especially those fed dry food, must drink a lot.

How much food should you give kittens?

Researchers calculated kittens’ food needs; is how much protein, fat, vitamins and other nutrients they should consume daily. Dosage tables can be found on each pack of ready-made kittens’ food. Practice teaches us, however, that it’s best to let kittens eat as much as they want! Feeding kittens in this way almost always works. Toddlers can correctly regulate the amount of food they eat. They do not overeat or go hungry.

Summary

In conclusion, dry food for kittens should be rich in protein and made with the real meat as a first ingredient, for example, with the chicken, lamb, fish. It is important to give the kitten everything essential on the early stage of life. That’s why nutrients similar to those in mother’s milk will be beneficial. Also, check if the company provides the food with probiotics, sources of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Always choose dry food which is free of artificial colours, by-products, and preservatives. Your kitten needs a special care and food to become a strong, and healthy cat.
